Football Rumours:
Messi: it has been a tough year
The Argentina international, who has just signed a new contract that will see him become the world’s best-paid footballer, has struggled with injuries and relatively poor form over the past 12 months.
However, even as Barca's star player, the four-time Ballon d'Or winner does not feel that he should shoulder the blame for the Catalans' failure to win anything other than the Supercopa de Espana.
"It was a tough year and it has not been the best for me,” Messi admitted to Mundo Deportivo. "A big team [like Barcelona] is obliged to win titles and this year we accomplished nothing.
"It was kind of the whole group, though, not just individuals. But it was a let-down for the whole team."
Messi also argued that Gerardo Martino, who stepped down as coach last weekend, should not be made the scapegoat for Barca's failings, in light of all of the off-the-field, transfer-related controversies the club were forced to deal with.
"It was not easy for Tata [Martino],” he added. “There were things going on in and out of the court.
“We would have liked to have become champions for ourselves and for the manager - he deserved it."
After seeing his side miss out on the Liga title by being held at home by Atletico Madrid in Saturday's title decider, Messi admitted that he is hoping to put Barca's season behind him as quickly as possible so he can focus on helping Argentina win this summer's World Cup.
"I hope that now I can change my head before Brazil," the 26-year-old confessed. "Losing the title on the final day was a heavy blow.
"I will spend a few days with my family and then I’ll think about the Argentina team."

Jose Mourinho to wait on signings
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says he is not planning to sign any new players until after the World Cup.
The Portuguese has already begun planning for next season after captain John Terry was signed to a new one-year contract but left-back Ashley Cole has revealed his future lies away from Stamford Bridge after eight successful years in west London.
Mourinho had already admitted he was in the market for a new centre-forward after poor goal returns from Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba.
He told Sky Sports News: "Since the market will be open until 31st August, like it is, I think it will be more of the same.
"I think people (will) wait for the World Cup, wait for the first reaction of the first team, wait until after something happens.
"At Chelsea, the manager is the same, the basic structure of the team is the same, we don't need the season to finish and the results of the season make the decisions about what we need and what we don't need.
"Everything was done during the season, we knew perfectly what we wanted and I don't think we have huge work to do during the summer really."

Manchester United might wait until next week to announce new manager

United are thought to be close to a deal with the Dutchman, who is currently preparing Holland for the World Cup in Brazil, but look likely to wait a few more days before unveiling van Gaal as David Moyes' successor.
Van Gaal is preparing the Netherlands for a friendly against Ecuador on Saturday night, although it is understood he could head to Manchester on Monday before flying out to Portugal for a pre-World Cup camp the following day.
The 62-year-old has faced constant media attention in recent weeks, but insists the speculation has not distracted him from his day-to-day duties.
Reflecting on his lengthy career, he told Sky Sports News reporter Gary Cotterill: "I'm now for more than 40 years. I started as a professional player 19 years.
"In about three months I'm 63. Sixty three minus 19, more than 40 years. More than 40 years in this football world, so I can manage that."
Ryan Giggs, who took charge temporarily following Moyes' sacking after just 10 months in charge, held 'positive' talks with van Gaal in Holland on Wednesday to discuss his role in the new Old Trafford set-up.

World Cup: Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari under investigation
Portuguese authorities have revealed Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is the subject of a criminal investigation.
Officials have refused to confirm what the investigation relates to, with the matter falling under the country's judicial secrecy law.
Reports in Brazil and the Netherlands have claimed Scolari is suspected of tax evasion but he has denied any wrongdoing.
"I have correctly filed all my tax returns in all the countries where I have worked and I have always declared my income," he said.
"If anything is wrong, it is not my fault. I hope justice gets to the bottom of the facts."
Scolari was head coach of Portugal from 2003-2008 and guided his native Brazil to World Cup glory in the Far East over Germany at the 2002 tournament.
The 65-year-old began his second spell in the role in 2012 and will lead Brazil when they host this year's World Cup.
Brazil play Croatia in the opening match of the tournament in Sao Paulo on 12 June.
